Scout Notes: In the 30 minutes I spent at Alamo Square Market and Deli, everyone who walked in was greeted with some kind of nickname or asked to sing in their “opera voices” by the guys behind the counter before having their orders shouted out to Lance, the sandwich master. But, if you’re Jerry, the neighborhood dog-walker with a million keys on your belt, you’re greeted with a World Cup announcer-like shout from owner Eric Zighera and crew. See, Jerry couldn’t tear himself away from the Tuesday (BBQ Pork sandwich with coleslaw) or Friday (Steak sandwich) daily specials. He evidently grabbed sandwiches on a few other days in between, and now proudly holds the record for eating 210 sandwiches in one year. Yes, they’re that good. Eric is a Boston native, but he doesn’t have to tell you that – his wicked accent will. His hometown automatically makes him a Boar’s Head enthusiast, which he assures is the finest meat on the market. They don’t skimp on quality or quantity here, so expect your sandwich to be piled so high your jaw will crack a little when you take a bite. Other proof they’re serious over here: customers call in meat and cheese party platters (hello, Superbowl) by the pound. You won’t find this corner store/deli actually on a corner (it’s mid-block on the garage level of a Victorian), but who cares? You can’t beat a location right across from Alamo Square Park and the painted ladies. “We’re hard to find, but once they find us, they keep coming back,” Eric says.
