Scout Notes: What we talk about when we talk about the Brothers Fox: smoked wings, hearty comfort food, and some of the best 'cue in town. But now, with a recent revamp of the menu at Big Tex Decatur, Chef Rick Watson brings a fresh approach to this Texas-style homemade grub that's fresh, seasonal, and friendly to everyone—even if you come to Big Tex with a diet, a budget, or a couple kiddos. (Or all of the above. Bless you.) For those seeking the ultimate in Southern, Texan comfort food, you can't go wrong with a plate of chicken-fried steak... but if you're in search of the fresh-and-so-clean-clean, you never have to lower your standards to a limp, soggy side salad like you might at a sports bar. The Southwestern chicken Caesar, with cojita cheese, roasted corn, black beans, romaine, and tortilla strips, puts a typical Caesar to shame with its flavor. Makes sense: there's not much that's "typical" about Big Tex. Especially the margarita—that sucker is damn good. Part of the aforementioned menu update included a focus on more fresh, seasonal fare. But an even bigger focus? The neighbors. The guys behind Big Tex Decatur wanted to have a place where Decatur families, sports fans, margarita connoisseurs, and more could all kick back and relax in harmony, at one of the best and most beautiful bars in downtown Decatur. A place where a family could come in with little ones in tow and play some Skee-Ball in the game room while checking out both the grown-up options (like a whole stuffed N.C. trout) and the kids' menu. (Since when are kids eating steak fingers? Lucky.) A gaggle of sports spectators can kick it at the bar and watch their game on one of the many big-screen TVs, with their choice of over 90 craft beers. A couple craving date night with a Texan kick can share a bowl of pork green chili, followed by carnitas and the restaurant's beloved Silver Coin margarita or a "Pickle Back," made with house-made pickle juice. And everyone can save room for their red velvet cheesecake or one of Luna's specials created daily--all the desserts are made on site, and never frozen (unless it’s her homemade ice cream). Indeed, it's a place that reps the diverse cross-section that is Decatur, and serves 'em well with their signature blend of Texan-meets-Southern fare (plus those aforementioned grown-up dishes). Then again, we're not surprised they're feeding a whole community with such delicious food. After all, we are talking about the Fox bros.
