Description:
Scout Notes: To say thereʼs a slew of mediocre barbeque in Atlanta would be to downplay a dire situation. A genuine barbeque place can be an extricating island of genuine in an ocean of bland slaw, lukewarm baked beans, soggy toast, and too salty collards--enough to break any southern grandmaʼs heart. Thankfully, weʼve got Moeʼs Original BBQ as our personal barbeque savior, a liberator from the vinegar-laden, all too familiar model weʼve settled for. Their Alabama-style 'cue all started about twenty-something years ago when Moe himself, an older gent from Tuscaloosa, taught the Moe's BBQ boys their way around a smoker. You can thank him after you wipe their homemade 'Bama-style sauce from your face.Moeʼs is known for their pork and ribs--and the numbers show it. In a day, they might go through 15 racks of ribs and 100 pounds of pork, not to mention 25 birds and 5 gallons of collard greens. While impressive quantitatively, itʼs their specialities that push them into noteworthy territory. In addition to the not-so-typical Catfish Platter, smoked tofu, and fried green tomatoes, specialty sides are available daily, like watermelon salad, green beans, and coconut cream pie. An ode to their Tuscaloosa roots, ordering your sandwich "Bama-style" (pulled pork, slaw, housemade red sauce and white mayo-based sauce) is a great way to get in on the lesser known side of their ever-morphing, yet classic, menu.Opened in the old location of Kool Korners Cuban grocer on 14th Street, the restaurantpays homage to their preceding inhabitant by keeping an old sign up on its walls, which teem with pop culture art and memorabilia (all for sale/negotiation). A hand-painted Elvis oversees your finger-licking of homemade sauces and drink-sipping from the full bar, where, if you come on the right night, you could be planted for a while. Drink specials go on all week, Wednesdays holding the Midweek Moedown $1 beer night. We suggest you chill on the patio with a Bushwacker, a ʻadult frostyʼ combining sweet, icy goodness with rum, and get your swerve on. 'Bama-style.
