Instead, the streets transform into a showcase of the biggest names in rock and blues for the city's 13th annual Bluesfest International celebration. Legends collide at Friday's show, as Mark Farner of Grand Funk Railroad joins the Motor City All-Stars, led by Bob Seger's zeppelin-lunged saxophonist Alto Reed. As if walking straight out of Haight-Ashbury in the '60s, Big Brother and the Holding Company warm up the crowd with the rootsy psychedelia that helped propel Janis Joplin into the cultural consciousness.

On Saturday evening, New York City's Popa Chubby makes his mournful guitar weep with blistering technical proficiency, and headliner Edgar Winter, whose long career as a performer and composer—ranging from "Frankenstein" to 1999's Winter Blues—has always been tinged with blue.
